Guest wheeling a suitcase through the entry doors into a bright Rambla lobby

You know the drill. You land after a long flight, drag your bag across town then queue behind three other people while someone photocopies a licence and explains the wifi situation. It is the least restful part of any trip and it lands right when you would rather be horizontal.

Self check-in accommodation cuts that out entirely. At Rambla we call ours Walk Right In, which is exactly what you do.

It is a key card. It just lives on your phone instead of in your wallet, so your stay starts when you arrive rather than when someone is free to serve you.

The short version

  • Self check-in accommodation means you let yourself in. No front desk and no key handover.
  • When you book, we send you a link. You confirm your details and upload your ID. You can do it any time before you arrive, though most people knock it out straight away.
  • Your key then sits in the Rambla app. There are pin pads at every property as a backup.
  • Your key works from check-in to check-out, exactly like a key card. Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by 10am, with early check-in and late check-out available on request.
  • Our support team is there 24 hours a day. Every Rambla apartment works this way, across Brisbane and Melbourne.

So what is Walk Right In, really?

Self check-in accommodation is any stay where you let yourself in without meeting a member of staff. The term covers a lot of ground. Some places leave a lockbox by the entry and hope for the best. Others, like Rambla, run a proper system with a real team on the end of a phone.

The difference matters, because the good version gives you independence without leaving you stranded. Walk Right In is built into the booking rather than bolted onto it and it works the same way at every one of our apart-hotels.

From booking confirmation to your front door

Here is how Walk Right In works, start to finish.

‍

1. You book. Booking direct through rambla.com.au saves you 5% and includes a complimentary car space for your whole stay, which is worth knowing before you compare tabs.

2. We send you a link as soon as you book. Confirm your details, upload your ID and you are done. Any time before arrival day works, though most people do it on the spot.

3. Download the Rambla app and your key lands in it. No key collection, no forms at the door and no waiting for someone to finish a phone call.

4. You walk in. Your phone is your key, so you use it exactly where you would have used the plastic card. Entry, lift, apartment door. The only thing missing is the queue at reception.

Every property also has pin pads as a backup. If your phone is flat or you would simply rather use a code, there is a second way in that works just as well.

If your key is not cooperating it is usually a quick fix. Check that your Bluetooth is on, since that is how your phone talks to the door. Once your key is in the app you do not need internet to use it. If it still will not open, the number in your booking confirmation puts you through to our support team, who are there around the clock.

Arrive at 11pm, leave at 6am, nobody minds

Check-in at Rambla is from 2pm and check-out is by 10am. What Walk Right In changes is everything outside those hours.

A red-eye landing at half past eleven at night is not a problem, because there is nobody you need to wake up. A 6am airport run is not a problem either, because there is no key to hand back and no desk to settle up at.

After 7pm most places have one person on the desk. If someone arrives just ahead of you, that is your queue. With Walk Right In, there is no desk to queue at.

If you travel for work, this is the part that quietly changes the trip. Meetings run late, flights move and plans shuffle. Your accommodation does not need to be one more thing with an opinion about it.

Two practical notes. Early check-in and late check-out are subject to availability and may incur an additional charge, so request them before you arrive rather than on the day. When we can accommodate it we simply extend your key’s window at our end, the same way a front desk would re-cut a key card. Our Weekend Escape rate builds in a 12pm early check-in and a 12pm late check-out as standard.

Luggage storage is available on both your arrival and departure days. Get in touch with the property team and they will stash your bags, so you can drop them off, go and find breakfast then come back when your apartment is ready.

How your key keeps your apartment yours

It helps to think of it as a key card, because that is essentially what it is. The only difference is where it lives.

Your key becomes active at check-in time and stops working at check-out time, exactly as a key card would. If you have arranged an early check-in or a late check-out, we extend that window at our end so your key covers it. Nothing expires while you are still in the building and nothing keeps working once you have gone.

It opens your apartment and the shared spaces included in your stay, not anybody else’s front door. That means the rooftop at every property, plus the gyms at Perry House, Berwick House and South City Square.

And because it sits on your own phone, there is nothing to misplace in a taxi and nothing to hand back on your way out.

If someone else is on the booking they can have access too, so a partner or a colleague is not stuck waiting in the lobby for you to come down.

If something does go wrong at an unhelpful hour, it plays out exactly the way a key card failing at 1am would. You call our 24 hour support team on the number in your booking confirmation and they get you in.

Who does Walk Right In suit best?

Almost everyone. For a few people the benefit is immediate.

Business travellers and frequent flyers who arrive late, leave early and would rather not build a schedule around someone else’s front desk hours.

Families getting in after a long drive with tired kids in the back. Both parents can hold access too, rather than coordinating around one set of keys.

Longer-stay guests, which is much of who we look after. Longer stays are what we are built for, so plenty of people settle in for weeks or months on rates like Roam Further and Feel at Home. When you are somewhere that long, coming and going without a check-in ritual is not a novelty. It is just how living somewhere works.

Anyone who simply prefers their own company after a travel day. No small talk required and none taken personally. Or as Jess put it in her reel, an introvert’s dream.

Convenience is the standard now, not the perk

‍

Letting yourself in started as a convenience and has settled in as something travellers expect rather than notice. The point was never to take people out of the experience. It was to move them out of the doorway.

Our team is still very much there. They are just doing the useful things, like getting your apartment right, answering the phone at 1am and stashing your bags when you arrive early, instead of processing paperwork you could have done from your kitchen table three days earlier. That is where accommodation is heading. Service behind the scenes, so guests stay in control of their own time.

Walk Right In at every Rambla apartment in Brisbane and Melbourne

Walk Right In works the same way at all five of our addresses.

Brisbane

‍

Melbourne

‍

Each one is a full apartment with a kitchen or kitchenette and laundry, in a neighbourhood worth walking around. Most stays start at a two night minimum and some offers at three. We cater well to longer stays, so a stay can be a weekend or the season.

Frequently asked questions about self check-in accommodation

How does self check-in work?

You sort your check-in online before you arrive, any time after you book. On arrival day your key becomes available in the Rambla app and opens your apartment door, so you go straight in without visiting a front desk. Every property has pin pads as a backup.

What does self check-in actually mean?

It means you let yourself into your accommodation using your phone or a code rather than collecting a key from a person. At Rambla it means no queue, no paperwork on arrival and no set window you have to arrive within.

Which stays offer self check-in?

Plenty of apart-hotels now do, though the quality varies. Every Rambla apartment across Brisbane and Melbourne uses Walk Right In as standard, not as an upgrade or an add-on.

What if my phone dies or the key will not open the door?

Every property has pin pads as a backup, so a flat battery does not lock you out. If the key itself is misbehaving, check your Bluetooth is on first. If that does not fix it, call the number in your booking confirmation and our support team will get you in, any hour.

Can two people have access to the same apartment?

Yes. If someone else is on the booking they can hold access too, so you are not tied to one set of keys between you.

What if I need a late check-out?

Late check-out is subject to availability and may incur an additional charge, so request it before your last morning rather than on it. You can also book a rate like Weekend Escape that includes it. If you need to be out of the apartment but not out of the city, the property team can store your bags for the day.

Is a serviced apartment better value than a standard room?

Often, yes, particularly for longer stays. You get a full kitchen and laundry, more space and a better nightly rate the longer you stay. That adds up quickly once you are eating in and washing your own clothes rather than paying for both.
