Heading to Brisbane for a junior sports tournament? You're not alone. Every weekend, hundreds of families pile in for footy carnivals, netball finals, swim meets and rep matches. We've put together this guide to help you pick the right family accommodation Brisbane has to offer, based on the venue you're playing at.
In a hurry? Here's the rundown
- Brisbane hosts state and national junior tournaments year-round across rugby league, rugby union, AFL, netball, swimming, soccer, water polo, athletics, gymnastics and cycling.
- The big venue zones are the Gabba (Woolloongabba), Suncorp Stadium (Milton), Sleeman Sports Complex (Chandler), QSAC and Nissan Arena (Nathan), the Showgrounds (Bowen Hills) and Ballymore (Herston).
- We've got four Brisbane apartments, each near one of these venue clusters.
- A serviced apartment beats a standard room every time for sports families: kitchens, in-apartment laundry and space to spread out.
- Book direct with us and you'll get 5% off plus one complimentary car park space per room.
Why Brisbane has become Australia's junior sports travel hub
Brisbane has quietly become the country's go-to city for junior sport. The city has world-class venues left over from the 1982 Commonwealth Games, new ones being built ahead of Brisbane 2032 and a calendar that runs back-to-back from January to December.
The climate helps too. Outdoor sport runs nearly year-round, with mild winters and reliable conditions for footy, netball and rugby seasons. Tournaments roll in from every state and territory.
For families, that means more weekends away. So choosing where to stay matters just as much as packing the right boots and remembering the orange slices.
Brisbane's major sports venues and the tournaments they host
Brisbane's junior sport calendar is spread across half a dozen big venues. Here's a quick snapshot of where they are and what they host.

The good news? All of these venues sit within a 25-minute drive of at least one of our properties. Most are much closer.
Pick your base: matching your stay to your venue
The right base depends on the venue and the size of your crew. Below is how our four Brisbane stays match up.

Rambla @ Story House — closest to the Gabba
Story House sits in Kangaroo Point, a two-minute walk from the Gabba. If your tournament is cricket, AFL or anything Gabba-based, it's hard to stay closer.
It's also a short drive across the river to Suncorp Stadium for rugby and footy fixtures, with the CBD, South Bank and Kangaroo Point Cliffs all within a few minutes. Great for off-day recovery walks.
Story House is studio-only but our Deluxe Double Studios sleep up to four with two king beds. Best fit for a parent and a player, or a small touring family.
Rambla @ South/City/SQ — your Gabba and Nathan venue base
South/City/SQ is in the heart of Woolloongabba, walking distance to the Gabba. The benefit here is the precinct itself. You've got restaurants, a cinema, a supermarket and a gym partner (Neuewell) all in the same square.
Buses run to QSAC and Nissan Arena in Nathan in around 17 minutes via the 120 route, or about 9 minutes by car. The Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson is also a quick trip away, around 10 minutes by car or 15 minutes via the 100 bus. Useful if your netballers, athletes or junior tennis stars are out that way. Like Story House, this one is studio-only, so it suits smaller crews. Once Cross River Rail's new Woolloongabba station opens, the area gets even easier to navigate on game day.
Rambla @ Perry House — for the Showgrounds, Ballymore and interstate arrivals
Perry House in Bowen Hills sits next to the Brisbane Showgrounds and around a 5-minute walk from Bowen Hills train station. That makes it gold for interstate families flying in.
The Airtrain runs straight from Brisbane Airport to Bowen Hills in around 15 minutes, with kids under 14 travelling free when accompanied by a paying adult. Ballymore is about 5 minutes by car and the CBD is just over the hill.
This is also our pick for bigger families. Perry House has 1 BR, 2 BR and 2 BR/2 BA apartments with full kitchens and laundry, plus a rooftop heated pool and spa and infrared sauna for parent recovery after a long day on the sideline.
Rambla @ Berwick House — central for training pools and Valley sport
Berwick House in Fortitude Valley puts you within easy reach of central training pools, the Showgrounds, Ballymore and the CBD. It's a smart middle-ground if your weekend involves multiple venues, or if half the family is sport and the other half is sightseeing.
Like Perry House, Berwick House offers 1 BR, 1 BR Executive and 2 BR/2 BA apartments. The 2 BR sleeps four with a king and twin setup. You're also at the doorstep of James Street and the Valley dining scene for those late dinners after a 6pm grand final.
Sports family maths: why apartments win
A serviced apartment just works better for tournament weekends. Here's why.
- Feed the team without breaking a sweat. Every Rambla stay has a kitchen for 7pm pasta nights and breakfasts before the 7am whistle. Each rooftop also has a bookable rooftop BBQ, so a post-game feed with a view is on the cards too.
- In-apartment laundry so muddy kit, white netball dresses or chlorine-soaked togs are sorted by morning.
- Multiple bedrooms at Perry House and Berwick House, so siblings can sleep and parents can breathe.
- Living and dining space for taping ankles, post-game debriefs, board games on rest afternoons and parents catching up.
- Digital check-in so you can drop bags and head straight to warm-ups without queueing at a front desk.
- More space for less money when you compare two standard rooms against one of our apartments that sleeps the whole crew.
Standard rooms just don't cut it when you've got three kids, four bags of kit and a 5:30am alarm.

Local intel: tips from our side of the field
A few things we've picked up watching families pass through over the years:
- Parking: Free or low-cost parking is usually easier at the suburban venues (Sleeman, QSAC, Nissan Arena) than the inner-city ones (the Gabba, Suncorp). For Gabba games, leave the car at Story House or South/City/SQ and walk in.
- Avoid game-day traffic: Milton (Suncorp) and Woolloongabba (Gabba) clog up before kick-off. Build that into your timing or take public transport.
- Post-game feed: Kangaroo Point and Woolloongabba have great cafes for quick eats. Check our guide to the best Kangaroo Point cafes for our local picks.
- Recovery walks: Kangaroo Point Cliffs, New Farm Park and the Story Bridge walk are easy ways to loosen up tired legs on off days. Got a spare afternoon between fixtures? Our guide to the best family-friendly activities in Brisbane has plenty to fill it, and younger siblings will love the top playgrounds in Brisbane for every age.
- Pack a cooler bag: Game-day cricket carnivals especially can run six hours plus, and venue food adds up fast.
- Book direct with Rambla Perks: Save 5% on rates advertised elsewhere and get one complimentary car park space per room. If you're staying Fri to Sun or Mon, our Weekend Escape deal saves you 15%, plus you get 12pm check-in, 12pm late check-out and complimentary parking.

Story House in Kangaroo Point is our closest stay to Suncorp Stadium, about a 5-minute drive across the river. South/City/SQ in Woolloongabba is a similarly quick drive. Both are also walking distance to the Gabba, making them solid picks if your weekend covers fixtures at both venues.
