The Spring Racing Carnival is not a one day trip. It is a four week run of racing that peaks at Flemington from Saturday 31 October to Saturday 7 November 2026.
Most visitors book the Tuesday, stay in the CBD and go home. There is a better way to do it.
Brunswick sits north of the city, one train change from Flemington Racecourse. Anstey station is our local stop, a step from the front door. It is the base we would pick for the whole week.
Here is how the carnival runs in 2026, how we would get to Flemington from our front door and what to pack.

What is the Spring Racing Carnival and how long does it run?
The Spring Racing Carnival is Victoria's spring racing season, running from September through to November across Melbourne's major tracks. The centrepiece is the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington Racecourse. That runs eight days end to end, from Saturday 31 October to Saturday 7 November 2026, with four race days inside it.
Either side of it sit the big Saturday meetings at Caulfield and Flemington. Together they turn six weeks of the calendar into an event. So booking only the Tuesday means the busiest, most crowded day of the lot. The Saturdays and the Thursday are calmer and often better racing.

- Derby Day is the style day. Black and white, three Group 1 races and a serious racing crowd.
- Cup Day stops the nation. Biggest crowd, earliest start, most colour.
- Oaks Day is the glamour day, lighter on numbers and easier to move around.
- Champions Stakes Day closes the carnival with a garden party feel and three Group 1s.

Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate: the lead-in Saturdays worth planning around
Two Saturdays before the Flemington carnival are worth building a trip around and one of them is different in 2026.
Caulfield Cup, Saturday 17 October 2026, Caulfield Racecourse. The Group 1 over 2400m and the traditional form guide for the Melbourne Cup.
Cox Plate, Saturday 24 October 2026, Flemington Racecourse. This is the news. The Valley is under redevelopment, so the VRC has confirmed Flemington will host the 2026 Cox Plate for one year only.
That matters for your travel. The Cox Plate and the entire Cup Carnival run at the same track this spring, so book 24 October and 3 November and you only learn the run once. Same station, same route, same walk to the gate.
Getting to Flemington Racecourse from Brunswick on race day
Take the train. Flemington Racecourse has its own station inside the racecourse precinct and race day services run direct from Flinders Street and Southern Cross.
The route we would take
From Rambla @ Solarino House the walk to Anstey station is about 40 metres along Albion Street. Call it two minutes with a hat in your hand.
- Anstey station to North Melbourne on the Upfield line. About 12 minutes.
- Change at North Melbourne to the Flemington Racecourse race day service.
- Flemington Racecourse is the next stop. Trains run express from North Melbourne.
- Walk in through Train Gate Entry. The station sits inside the precinct so it is a short walk to the gates.
No need to go into the city and back out again. North Melbourne is where the two lines meet and it is the shortcut most first timers miss. Allow around 45 minutes door to gate on Cup Day. The train is quick but the crowd at both ends is not.
Check the Melbourne Cup Carnival transport page and the PTV Journey Planner in the fortnight before your race day, because extra services are only loaded closer to the date.
Skipping the queue at the station
Everyone leaves at once, so the line for the race day train after the last race is long by design.
If you would rather keep moving, walk out to Racecourse Road and take the No. 57 tram to Flemington Bridge, then the Upfield line home to Anstey. You are on your way while the platform is still filling up.
The tram option
If the trains are packed, the VRC recommends the No. 57 West Maribyrnong tram from the corner of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street, hopping off at Flemington Drive, Stop 30, right outside the main gate.
From Brunswick that means the route 19 tram down Sydney Road to Elizabeth Street, then a change to the 57. It is slower than the train but it drops you at the door.
Getting home after the last race
Melbourne's all night Night Network trains and trams only run on Friday and Saturday nights. Cup Day is a Tuesday, so you are on standard weeknight services. Race day trains from Flemington also stop running once the crowd clears. Know your last train before the last race.
What to wear to the races and where to get ready in Brunswick
There are two dress codes at Flemington and only one of them is enforced.

Where to get sorted in Brunswick
Sydney Road is a genuine formalwear strip. It is best known as Melbourne's bridal precinct, which means tailoring, alterations and hair are all on the doorstep.
- Alterations. Brunswick Stitch House Alterations at 537 Sydney Road handles bridal and garment work, which is exactly the skill set a race day outfit needs.
- Hair and styling. Sydney Road has plenty of salons doing occasion hair. Book ahead for carnival week rather than walking in.
- Finishing touches. The Sydney Road trader directory lists fabric, jewellery and formalwear shops the length of the strip.
One honest note on hats. Brunswick is strong on tailoring and styling but it is not a millinery precinct, so plan your headwear before you arrive or head into the city for it.
Cup Day is a public holiday, so plan the rest of the week too
Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday right across Victoria on Tuesday 3 November 2026. Some regional councils swap it for a different local holiday, so double check if your trip takes you outside Melbourne. That changes the shape of the week. Offices close, the city fills up and the days either side get treated as long weekend territory.
Things to build around it:
- The market run. Queen Victoria Market trades on Tuesdays from 6am. Public holiday hours can differ, so check the site the week before.
- The post race wind down. Howler on Dawson Street has a big garden, a bar and live music. It is a short walk from Sydney Road.
- Dinner without the trek. Casa Chino sits on site at Solarino House serving Peruvian-Chinese food. After nine hours on your feet, the best restaurant is the close one.
- The atmosphere without a ticket. Plenty of Sydney Road and Lygon Street venues screen the Cup with a lunch package. Most announce in October, so check their socials first.
