Free things to do in Brisbane, no ticket required

You can fill an entire day in Brisbane without spending a cent, and South Bank is the best place to start. Entry to South Bank Parklands is free, along with a swim at Streets Beach, a visit to the Queensland Art Gallery and a wander through the Gallery of Modern Art. Streets Beach is Australia's only inner-city, man-made beach, it is free to use, and it is patrolled by lifeguards all year round.
Wondering what to do in Brisbane today for free as an adult? GOMA offers expansive contemporary galleries with free general entry and you can catch a matinee at QPAC or settle in at a riverside cafe nearby. Our full South Bank guide has plenty more.
For Brisbane's best free attractions further afield, you can stroll the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, hike Mount Coot-tha for panoramic views, or watch the sunset from the Kangaroo Point Cliffs.
Staying on the southside? Our South/City/SQ apartments sit right in the South/City/SQ precinct in Woolloongabba, which runs free themed food truck markets on the last Friday of most months. Expect live music, artisan stalls and a different theme each time, from La Dolce Vita in August to Halloween Markets in October. Grab a bite, pull up a seat and soak up the buzz right downstairs.

Getting around Brisbane on event days
Public transport is your best friend on a big event day, and Brisbane lays on extra services when it counts. CityCat ferries are perfect for South Bank festivals and most of our Brisbane stays sit within easy reach of a train station or busway.
For the Ekka, the timing could not be easier. The Exhibition train station reopens for the Ekka and drops visitors right in the heart of the Showgrounds precinct. For Riverfire and Brisbane Festival, plan ahead for road and river closures. Additional Citytrain, bus and CityCat services run on Riverfire night to help visitors travel to and from the event with ease.
For stadium nights at Suncorp, leave the car behind. Trains and buses run frequently to Milton and rideshare surge pricing after a concert is rarely worth it. Stay close, and you can often skip the queues altogether.
When should you book accommodation for Brisbane's biggest events?
Book as early as you can for any stadium event, because Brisbane's best stays fill up fast. As a rough guide:
- Foo Fighters and Robbie Williams: Book the moment you have tickets. Single-night stadium events clear out the city's apartments quickly.
- Rugby League World Cup (25 October and 15 November): Lock in now. International events draw interstate and overseas crowds and the finals weekend will be tight.
- Brisbane Festival and Riverfire (early September): Book a few months out, as opening weekend is the busiest.
- The Ekka (8 to 16 August): You have a slightly longer window thanks to the nine-day run, but the People's Day weekend goes early.
- The silly season (December): Just as busy as spring, with Christmas, school holidays and New Year's Eve all drawing crowds. Book early, especially for anything over the NYE weekend.

Booking direct with us is the smart move too, with real savings on top of the perks. Become a Rambla Member for 5% off plus a complimentary car park. Or for an event weekend, our Weekend Escape rate saves you 15%, with early check-in, 12pm late check-out and free parking. Staying longer? Save up to 25% on extended stays.
